Friday, February 15, 2013 Category : , , , 0

One of the world’s biggest international football tournaments kicks off in Johannesburg this weekend – the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

African football has become increasingly popular in recent years because so many African players are now playing for big clubs in Europe’s top leagues.

As a result fans from all over the world will be tuning in to see which team will be crowned kings of the African continent.

Sixteen nations have qualified to battle it out for footballing glory and you can follow every goal, all the scores and all the latest news on your Nokia.

No matter where you are, what you’re doing or which Nokia device you have, you’ll never be far away from the action.

This mobile app promises to deliver ‘unique and innovative’ coverage of the 29th Africa Cup of Nations.

It will feature live text commentary of matches, live scores, match reports, group standings, fixtures and team profiles.

AFCON 2013 is compatible with Symbian Belle, Symbian Anna, 5th edition S60 and Asha Touch devices.

Owners of Lumia devices are already well served by football and sports apps many of which will have comprehensive coverage of the tournament but you may want to try this AFCON 2013 app as well.

This offers the usual diet of news, team profiles and fixtures and serves as a nice introduction to the Africa Cup of Nations.

In particular, it has useful information on the host cities – handy if you’re lucky enough to have made it over there!

The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations runs from 19 January to February 10.

One day only: Smash hit Disney games free for your Nokia Lumia

Thursday, February 14, 2013 Category : , , , , 0

Even though Christmas has just come and gone, we still have a couple of awesome presents for your Nokia Lumia 920 or Lumia 820 smartphones.

Update: Grab them quickly! This offer will finish at 8PM GMT on 18/1/2013.

For a limited time, you can download two hugely popular mobile games from Disney, “Where’s My Water?” and “Where’s My Perry?” for free as they make their debut on the Windows Phone 8 platform.

Both of these titles challenge you to master the laws of physics as you embark upon a series of puzzles and adventures.

Your task is to help friendly alligator, Swampy, get a shower following a long day in the city’s sewers.

Unfortunately, his shower is broken so you have to direct water through a maze of urban plumbing so that Swampy can get a wash.

It sounds simple but to succeed you’ll need to keep an eye out for algae, toxic ooze, triggers and traps.

This addictive game is a physics-based puzzler featuring vibrant graphics, a stonking soundtrack and over 400 levels that get harder and harder.

Fans of Disney’s animated TV show, Phineas and Ferb, will be familiar with Agent P. Not content with being on TV, he is now also starring in his own hit mobile game!

Agent P finds himself trapped in the sewers and you will need your mastery of physics to help him escape.

With the help of some lasers you will have to guide water in all of its various forms, such as steam and ice, to the generators that power his transportation tubes so Agent P can get out.

‘Where’s My Perry?’ features 80 puzzles to test your wit and ingenuity.

Both these superb Disney games, which have a normal selling price of £0.79p, are free to download and keep on your Windows Phone 8-powered Nokia Lumia smartphone.

This special offer is available for a limited time. Be sure that you don’t miss out!

TweetEnjoying Nokia Music on your Lumia, and want more of it? You’re in luck. Nokia today announces Nokia Music+, which brings a slew of new and richer options for a low monthly subscription fee of €3.99/$3.99.

For those that love the original free Mix Radio service, it will remain intact – this is all about adding extra.

Jyrki Rosenberg, VP Entertainment at Nokia, told us, “People love Nokia Mix Radio – in fact, many people are amazed that we can offer it for free.

“It’s the only smartphone music service out there offering access to millions of songs out of the box without the need to sign up, sign in, or suffer adverts in between enjoying the music. When you add in the ability to skip songs and save playlists for offline uses like the tube, you have something unique.

“We spend a lot of time listening to how people use the service and have even managed to half the amount of skips per songs played, which is a combination of our systems and musicologists understanding and shaping Nokia Music around the users.

“Nokia Music is great for discovering new music, and we’ve found that there’s a core of users that want even more of it. This is how Nokia Music+ came about. By introducing features like infinite skips and unlimited downloads, we’re opening the doors for unlimited music discovery at only €3.99 per month.

“This is for people who care enough about music to pay something for more quality and choice, but don’t want to pay €9.99 monthly.”

So what do you get?

Unlimited skips. Whether you like to skip from track to track, or just want extra control over what you hear. There’s no stopping you with Nokia Music+.

Unlimited downloads. The free service allows you to download up to four Mixes (each of which contains hours of music) and play them without an Internet connection. The paid service removes this limit – you can download a massive supply of offline music you can swap as you wish.

Higher quality. We were surprised by the high quality of streaming music from Nokia Music, even over a 2.5G connection. Nokia Music+ allows you to download music at eight six times the existing quality. Plus, you can set rules to only download high quality when you’re on WiFi, for example.

Lyrics. Words to the songs you’re listening to, right on your Nokia Lumia. Either in a scrolling list, Karaoke-style format, or a display you can scroll up and down.

On your desktop. The Nokia Music+ subscription also gives you access to the service without your phone. A web-app gives you the ability to play Mixes on your computer, smart TV or other connected screens.

Nokia Music+ will roll out in the next few weeks. The price will vary slightly according to territory, but is expected be available at around €3.99/$3.99 per month.

great! I have an XBox music pass and I absolutely love it. But the discovery aspect of Nokia music gives me the opportunity to find songs from artists I didn’t even know before.

I just wish the catalogue would become bigger as its big enough but not very big. Another aspect that could help is if you offer a “heart” button next to the song that people are listening to to signal like or dislike. That way you can easily give people a chance to filter their music and tell you what they like and what they hate.

Skipping works for dislike and “download more from this artist” works for like but its a very cluncky solution. Sometimes people don’t want to waste a skip just in order to signalize “I don’t like this”…

anyway, great music service.

http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

The catalogue is massive, but obviously there’s a subset of that available at any one time through Mixes. They’re refreshed pretty regularly, though.

Totally agree that it’s the discovery aspect that makes Nokia Music unique and super value.

[edit: I should add that you get access to the full pool of music by making custom 'artist-based' mixes. Hope that helps!]

http://twitter.com/kps91 Kunwar Preet Singh

so this and nokia music unlimited(NMU) subscription will go side by side?

http://twitter.com/BLAZEMONGER Paul van der Heu

Doubt it, NMU is what’s offered in India.

http://twitter.com/kps91 Kunwar Preet Singh

NMU is just in india? no other country?

http://www.facebook.com/simon.bull.33 Simon Bull

It’s also available in China.

XB_Mod

it used to be available in a lot of countries but due to lack of interest they reduced the support to China and India I think.

http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003693923679 Ayush LP Mathur

NMU only offers Unlimited download from store, and reading this, I guess this add-on is only for Mix radio, and not for Music Store, so they will go parallel, buy NMU for store and this NM+ for Mix Radio. But alas problem is still there, we cant download High Quality songs from Nokia Music Store, and hardly few people save mix radio for of online, so what’s the need oh High quality Mix radio download, it gonna be a disappointment in India if I am right.

Sven

Be kind to your neighbour Sweden and let us be 1 of the countries that gets it first

http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

I’m hoping that since the Nokia Music engineers are based in the UK that we will get it first…

http://www.clubnokiard.com/ Frankie Bloise

I will be glad to pay for this, specially since I will be able to play my music not only in my Lumia but in my PC and my SmartTV!

http://conversations.nokia.com/ Adam Fraser

That’s one feature I’ve been waiting for, too.

http://twitter.com/FdoCortesM Fernando Cortés

I have a Nokia Lumia 710 and in my country (Chile) and probably all of Latin America we don’t even have Nokia Music. It was one of the features I was looking forward the most…

http://www.clubnokiard.com/ Frankie Bloise

mostly due to licensing issues with local companies… I remember when living in Dominican republic, sometimes CD’s and even Movies were handled by local companies and the movies got there months later. See Netflix’s example, the Latin America Netflix has a very poor movie selection compared to US, Canada or even Europe.

http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003216253842 Esaud Eduardo Cruz

well… in Mexico we have nokia music since day one, even in the good old days of nokia 8500 comes whit music, i guess is just matter of time nokia to brings the service in every place they sell their phones

http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003693923679 Ayush LP Mathur

amazing, its cool, I was waiting for feature to download high quality tracks on my phone. Just a bit of confusion, is it only for lumia or will it be available for Symbian phones too. actually I use nokia 700 for music purpose as it have Dolby enhancements but not my Lumia 610, oh BTW, it is for WP7.8 devices too, right?
and at last, a suggestion, please improve the way we search or better say Discover music on Nokia Music. Nevertheless, its a great service by Nokia . :)

Guest

Admin, I need your reply please…..

@AdFraser:disqus Admin, I need your reply please…..

http://twitter.com/mazzeger Mazze

I also like Nokia Music, but to be honest, whenever I come across a good song I add it to my playlist at a competitors subscription service. Why not introduce unlimited downloads of the songs you actually like like Spotify allows you to do? Call it Nokia Music Unlimited or something like that and charge the same price. I’m positive you would get quite a few subscriptions.

http://twitter.com/jmrolenc Jan Martin Rolenc

Will the service be available in the Czech Republic?

http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003635518214 Gustav Christensson

So that’s the reason behind the “Standard Quality” label in Nokia Music…

http://mobihalo.wordpress.com/ Ayush Mathur

is that song not saving problem solved?

http://www.facebook.com/sushovan.majumdar Sushovan Majumdar

Please tell me if this will work on Nokia Lumia 920 which I bought from Dubai & using in India? cause right now nokia music is not working. Only it plays my own songs. I don’t see the mix radio options. PLease let me know.

rynkx

I think you might need to re-authorize your device. I’m also using a Dubai bought phone in India and I can use the full feature-set in Nokia Music app. If you were already using Nokia Music on another mobile device (WP7.5 or even symbian), then you have to go to the Nokia Music website and replace you previous device’s IMEI with your current one. Thats what I had to do before it would start working.

http://www.facebook.com/sushovan.majumdar Sushovan Majumdar

I was not using nokia music earlier. Can you please let me know how to go about this? Customer care didn’t help . Please provide me the steps so that i can use all features of nokia music.

Francois Magny

Oh yeah, I would pay for this. I also pay for a Zune Pass/ Xbox Music pass but the Windows Phone 8 implementation of the service is, well, a downgrade from Windows Phone 7. Anywho… bring this service to Canada.

semo

???? ???????? ??

Obviously this will not be coming to Canada since your previous nokia music isn’t in Canada. Thanx a lot!

http://twitter.com/Hdrules Hradayesh Nimavat

Nice to see finally Nokia music updating to 320 kbps quality I guess though I hope Nokia music and Microsoft will provide music in flac format one day….

maharshi83

Hi my Nokia music no longer working it just shows my music and settings.I tried re installing and even restored to factory settings and re installed still the same issue.I can’t see any mix radio or gigs offline music in the menu.I am trying to take this issue to blogs no body cares.Nokia please do take care.

http://www.facebook.com/chintannapster Chintan Dave

Create another Nokia account and try with that. I had same problem and it worked for me now after creating new nokia account..

vmgunz

Great!! Love Nokia Music – Mix Radio. Will it be available in Singapore??

http://www.facebook.com/kristijan.sasilo Kristijan Sašilo

Love it! Unfortunately, can’t enjoy it properly. Please, Nokia. You should offer this service to every country where you sell (officially) Lumia devices. It only hurts you and the entire platform if the service is fragmented. Same goes to Microsoft and their Xbox services. I live in Croatia and I would GLADLY pay for either Xbox Music Pass or Nokia Music+. My Windows Phone is sad and lonely without all these cloud multimedia services and my Windows Phone experience is not complete.

http://www.facebook.com/omonrise Arseny Starostin

I guess its not that Nokia isn’t trying too, just in many countries the lable organizations are reallllyyyy hard to deal with

jiipee

Nokia, where is the n9 version? You promoted the device heavily here on Conversations and L800 did not arrive that much later, but it had the service on board.

Is this the same Jyrki, former head of Meego, who emailed:

“I am pleased to confirm that we will continue to support N9. We will be putting out another SW release and even after that there will be support as needed.
Best regards,
Jyrki Rosenberg
Head of MeeGo”

hysonmb

I’ve got a 1 year Xbox Music Pass right now and due to the horrid experience they released for managing music / media I may just call that a loss and jump on with Nokia Music+.

rajavelu_v

+1for nokia music +

Well, not very excited since it wasn’t available in New Zealand before, it’s not available now.

Same thing goes here in Malaysia..screwed….

http://www.facebook.com/dannyjsteiger Danny Steiger

LOVE IT. I have been so frustrated with the lack of Spotify on WP8, and the xbox music experience has been a nightmare. I’m also hoping that we can download individual songs, as opposed to mixes?

From these individual songs hopefully we can make our own playlists (mixing genres, etc).

Thank you Nokia for doing such a great job of supporting your hardware with amazing software solutions. You have created a loyal customer through all of this.

Jeremy

Exactly. I recently discontinued my Spotify Premium account because I can’t get it on my 920. I really hope we can get individual tracks, or even whole CD downloads, and not just mixes…

Please create an RT app for Surface owners.

i am grateful to own a Lumia 920. I will be more grateful if Nokia Music is available in Malaysia.

Stuart Longair

Cancelled my Spotify premium service too as not available for the WP8 that I have recently ordered from Orange UK. I will use the free Deezer swappable app instead and from trying it on my iPad first it seems to be a good replacement. Perhaps not yet as good as Spotify though. The free Nokia Radio feature is great too and I can then add the new songs discovered there to a Deezer playlist. Sorted.

jaygss

Didn’t someone promise us Pandora as well?

(loving my Nokia Music Mix and will get + as well- because of the discovery feature though)

Will it be available in Indonesia?

http://twitter.com/zaimc zaimc

can I sync my music library with this phone using iTunes? all my music has grown in there and I’m wondering if the Nokia can sync with it like all my playlists n stuff

http://www.pureea.com/ corporate entertainment melbou

Well, cell phone is becoming new sources of entertainment or music. This is such a nice way to introduce new teqhnology to your consumer

Laurence Smith

I am from the UK, but will be travelling later in the year throughout Europe and Asia. Will I be able to use Nokia Music+ whilst travelling…or can I only refresh/create new playlists when I am in my home country (England). I have the Lumia 620 – and would definitely sign up for this service if it were possible to use it when travelling.
Thank you

setiabud

How do I subscribe? I got my Nokia Music updated to 3.7.x and I am clueless about how to subscribe.

Feature on prime-time US TV by becoming the Next App Star

Category : , , 0

If you’re a developer – or wannabe developer – on the Windows Phone 8 platform, now is a great time to publish that app to the Windows Phone Store. The Windows Phone Next App Star competition is now open and could see your app making an appearance in an advertisement on prime-time TV in the USA.

While the grand prize is your app featuring on US TV, the competition is open to developers worldwide.

To participate, you must be a registered developer with at least one app in the Windows Phone Store and have published something to at least one country. Your content doesn’t have to be brand new, older apps have as much a chance of winning as new ones.

You’ll also need to ‘opt-in‘, so make sure you login to do that; otherwise you’ll not be entered.

Initially, the Windows Phone team will judge all the app submissions based on an equal weighting of user ratings and app quality, including your implementation of new Windows Phone 8 features, such as Live Tiles. This is to stop people cheating and getting their friends to give 5-star ratings in the hope of being picked.

The best way to ensure you’re apps are chosen is to make the absolute most of what Windows Phone 8 has to offer. Create an app as rich as possible. Create a Live Tile that looks amazing on the Start screen. Utilise SkyDrive so that people can upload or download files. Or, make use of the HERE platform to provide the most accurate location experience possible.

Whatever you decide to use or create, it must run on Windows Phone 8. However, why not have it run on both Windows Phone 7.5 and 8 for extra brownie points?

Once the Windows Phone team have picked the appropriate apps, they’ll then narrow that list down to just 64 to go head-to-head in bracket-style competition. This will then be open to public voting.

Over the following several of weeks, the public will vote, whittling down the entries to 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, and ending with just one winner, taking home the grand prize of the U.S. TV ad slot and the title of the Next App Star.

Additional prizes will be on offer throughout the contest to encourage people to participate. There will be thousands of dollars worth in prizes up for grabs for the developers of the 64 apps; including a Nokia Lumia 920, featured promotion in the Windows Phone Store and a one-year free Dev Center subscription.

Even if you don’t win, the exposure of your apps in the competition itself may still see you gaining new fans and some extra money from new app purchases.

App submission ends on 5th March, and the public voting ends 8th April, 2013. Remember, you’ll need to opt-in to take part – your apps won’t automatically be entered.

Check out the official rules or the Windows Phone Developer Blog for more details.

Will you be taking part?

Toyota and Wetter.com choose HERE

Category : , , 0

Toyota-and-Wetter.com-join-the-HERE-platform

When people talk about digital maps, naturally the option of navigation immediately springs to mind. For example, when commuting to work or driving in unfamiliar places using voice guided turn-by-turn navigation comes in handy. Additionally, traffic info plays a key role in getting us to our destination, safely and quickly.

We have been helping to paint this picture for the last decades as a pioneer of digital mapping and in-car navigation. We continually strive to provide fresh content and services to meet the needs of our automotive customers. Currently, four out of five cars with in-dash navigation are powered by HERE.  This means that automobile manufacturers can deliver innovative solutions and we can help fulfill the requirements of the automotive industry.

2013ToyotaAvalonLTD003

The latest automotive brand to select HERE to power their next generation Touch&Go navigation and infotainment systems is Toyota, who are in good company with the likes of BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen and Hyundai. Toyota has signed up to use our search with high-quality industry mapping information and community-generated content, including millions of ratings, reviews and images fed directly into their cars from early 2014 in Europe, Russia and the Middle East.

With HERE, Nokia is the leading mapping company providing end-to-end mapping, navigation and location solutions for the automotive industry. But with maps, and specifically with our location platform, our partners can build services that go beyond navigation. That’s the beauty of our business; we can support different kinds of services.

We lead the way with our maps, which are used over 100 million times a day in a wide variety of devices, services and apps around the world. In fact, wetter.com, Europe’s largest German language weather portal with 13 million unique visitors, is using our API for integration into its expanding European web and mobile weather mapping services.

The first application to benefit is the online Niederschlagsradar (precipitation radar) service in which the map data is overlaid with information from radar stations and satellite imagery. You can track rain and snow cloud movement and see whether light showers, heavy rain, sleet hail or snow are heading your way. By zooming in and out, the current ‘precipitation’ situation can be viewed over an area as small as a street up to a town, a country or even an international region. The information is updated every 15 minutes and is available in Austria, France, Germany, Spain and the UK.

Nokia Asha 310 brings Easy Swap Dual SIM and Wi-Fi

Category : , 0

Nokia Asha 310 brings Easy Swap Dual SIM and Wi-Fi – Nokia Conversations : the official Nokia bloghtml {background-repeat: no-repeat; -webkit-background-size: cover; -moz-background-size: cover; -o-background-size: cover; background-size: cover; height:100%;} #wpadminbar{ display: block !important; } Nokia Asha 310 brings Easy Swap Dual SIM and Wi-Fi

Published by Ian Delaney on February 12, 2013

TweetThe new, super-versatile Nokia Asha 310 is a mobile milestone for Nokia: it’s our first smartphone to offer both Dual-SIM and Wi-Fi together.

That means that owners can enjoy the benefits of both Wi-Fi and Dual SIM, such as saving money by choosing a wireless network for accessing the Internet, and the flexibility of being able to use the right SIM card for the right purpose, without having to change handsets.

The Nokia Asha 310 has Dual SIM on steroids. Nokia’s Easy Swap Dual SIM technology is designed to make swapping between different SIM cards as easy as possible, in order to get better tariffs or to switch between SIMs for personal or work use. Your main SIM card sits behind the battery, as normal. But the slot for the second SIM on the side of the phone allows you to switch the second SIM easily, without needing to switch off the phone. With the SIM manager you can assign unique profiles for up to five SIM cards and define which SIM card you want to use for calling, sending text messages or for using Internet data.

The latest version of the Nokia Xpress Browser is available for the Nokia Asha 310 via an over-the-air download. The Nokia Xpress Browser compresses data by up to 90 per cent, meaning that you can download pages quickly even over a slow connection, and save money at the same time, without compromising the browsing experience.

Of course, we all prefer to use Wi-Fi when it’s available, and its inclusion in the Nokia Asha 310 offers the best way to enjoy entertainment online – like streaming videos from YouTube or downloading files or apps from Nokia store, including any of the 40 EA games offered for free with the phone.

Tech SpecsSystem: GSM/EDGE  900/1800Dimensions: 109.9 x 54 x 13mmWeight: 103.7gDisplay: 3-inch WQVGA, capacitive touchMemory: Up to 20MB internal free user memory. Up to 32GB MicroSD memory cardConnectivity: WiFi GPRS/EDGE, Bluetooth 3.0 with A2DP support,  Micro USB 2.0 connector, 3.5 mm AV connector, USB and 2mm pin chargingBattery: Up to 25 days standby; up to 17 hours talk-time

Those 40 free EA games are only the beginning when it comes to apps. The Nokia Asha 310 comes with preloaded email, Facebook, Twitter and eBuddy. Push notifications from eBuddy make sure you won’t miss a single chat with your friends.

With the Nokia Asha 310, you won’t get lost either: the pre-loaded Nokia Maps works online and offline, while the Nokia Nearby web app will point out the local sights and places to go. When you’ve finished playing with those, thousands more apps are available from Nokia Store.

A full-touch device with a scratch-proof 3-inch display, the Nokia Asha 310 also offers a 2-megapixel camera. There’s a MicroSD card slot for extra storage, and either a 2GB or 4GB card is included in the box. Of course, if this is not enough and you want to store even more content on your phone, you can extend the storage up to 32 GB. The sleek, polished shell comes in black, white and gold colour choices.

Like all our Asha phones, the Nokia Asha 310 boasts an impressive battery life that puts other smartphones to shame. In this case, that’s 17 hours talk-time or up to 25 days on standby from a single charge.

The Nokia Asha 310 will be available in Asia, India, the Middle East, Africa and Brazil from Q1 2013. Without local taxes or any operator subsidies, it will cost around $102 (USD).

Scratch-proof display? Then what about my Lumia 620 then?
Great device although I still prefer the Asha 311 for its 3G availability.

http://www.netmba.com/ Rygel

Looks like a N8-light ,,, whats new? I think the N8 is much better.

arg0

You can indeed get a used N8 on eBay for about the same price, but if you need dual-SIM, N8 is not an option.

http://www.netmba.com/ Rygel

Who need dual sim? Ever heard of “forward”?

khabardaar

I need dual sim, I am using one in a china-made phone and yes I have an N8 too but I need a better but low-cost handset, with wifi so this could be it. If not than 303 it could be.

http://www.netmba.com/ Rygel

ok. I prefer 2 phones, instead of dual sim.

khabardaar

It is about personal preference. I have several active smartphones, but to go out I prefer a simple and average powerful device to go out with. Dual sim will be mostly for using one sim for call and text services and another for mobile-Internet with better package.

http://www.netmba.com/ Rygel

if you say so ;) do whatever you like for me ;) My comment is that this new Asha 310 just look like a N8-light version, So why not buy “the real thing” the N8 is a much better phone.

Diazene

a used phone could be broken, has defects, has missing accessories…
some people prefer a new phone

http://mobihalo.wordpress.com/ Ayush Mathur

the thing is, n8 is a high end phone running on an os whose support is stopped by nokia and a new phone costs 4x times the asha phones which are budget phones. moreover n8 is not a dual sim phone.

http://www.netmba.com/ Rygel

hehe ;) But the Asha phone is running the same system as N8 ! ;) its Symbian Belle on both phones. So if you can not use N8 because the symbian system, then why do you mean the Asha phone is better? as long as it runs the same system ;))

Andyteroo

Nokia asha310 runs S40,not symbian belle.
And to add, i’ve seen that is impossible to argue with you pal.

http://www.netmba.com/ Rygel

even worse… Symbian belle is a lot better than s40 ;)

http://mobihalo.wordpress.com/ Ayush Mathur

Dude, first of all i didnt said that asha phone is better than n8. Second, asha 310/311 or any other asha do not run Symbian Belle os. Instead they have symbian s40 optimized for full touch. Better make ur facts clear and then argue…….!!!

yeah exactly.

http://www.netmba.com/ Rygel

even worse… Symbian belle is a lot better than s40 ;) right?

http://mobihalo.wordpress.com/ Ayush Mathur

ya, thats right, but after all, its not a high end phone

Sent from my Windows Phone

http://www.facebook.com/iamsujeet Sujeet Haldkar

wtf dude. Asha is just a polished version of s40. Its not symbian belle. Symbian is officially dead.

http://www.netmba.com/ Rygel

hehehe ;) But S40 is even more dead than S60 ;)

arg0

I frequently travel within Europe, and roaming costs from one country to another are very high, so forwarding calls is a bad idea. Moreover, people may want to select what SIM to call from, because of different costs for calling different numbers.
There are probably less use cases for people living in the US, but in other continents dual SIM phones are highly appreciated.

http://www.netmba.com/ Rygel

So? Why not use a Quarter-sim phone then? A phone with 4 simcards? ;)

Honest, i dont see your problem, because its more easy to use 2 phones. One main and another very small. Then you can have one smartphone with one simcard, and another very small simple phone for the other simcard.

arg0

Actually I would prefer being able to load multiple identities on one SIM: that would settle the issue. Anyway, I carry around 2 phones now (one big, one small), and it’s still a burden, because I cannot leave the main phone behind even when I just need one. So I’d prefer a dual-SIM phone. But I agree it’s a matter of personal choice.

http://mobihalo.wordpress.com/ Ayush Mathur

talking about countries like india, there is still no full coverage by a single provider to every area, so people prefer keeping a dual sim phone. where there is less network of one, we use the second one if available.
another reason to define a dual sim phone is terrif plans. I keep two sims, one sim for low cost and high speed data plan, and other for low cost calling plan. value added services also matters, companies like airtel, vodafone etc has hell lot of value added service (one is purchasing app via phone bill on ovi store, one main reason I have their sim and no I don’t have a credit card, I am a student), but calling charges are high. but on other side, carriers like bsnl gives low rates on calling.
Its complicated……… and really needed to get resolved asap

http://www.facebook.com/umairshah1992 Umair Shah

Thats what i was looking for in Nokia Asha series… Does it have multitouch too?

http://gadjade.com/ Jade Bryan V. Jardinico

based on my review, only pinch one, as I remember. This is on image, maps and few games.

What is the Price in Pakistan Rupees.plz anyone tell

zakk

hahaha funny coming from a napak guy like you.. please keep your napakki within you and don’t spread it around..

http://twitter.com/Hdrules Hradayesh Nimavat

Nice to see Nokia stretching up Asha series phones….here in India all local Android OEMs like Mircomax etc are offering low end and also mid end phones with dual sim feature so I think Nokia should either release Lumia 510 successor with dual sim facility or they should continuously improve and introduce new Asha phones with more features and better hardware in terms of bigger display and higher megapixel camera with low prices.

http://www.facebook.com/iamsujeet Sujeet Haldkar

those cheap android phones are selling like a hot cake but when it comes to quality they not even last to a year or less .

http://mobihalo.wordpress.com/ Ayush Mathur

that’s true, but those cheapos are still selling. all thanx to ads and promotion by leading tech shows like tech guru on cnbc… the man there says wp is worst os, apps crashes and phones heats up….. total bullshit!!! and innocent people believe on them and buying canvas 110/116 whatever!!!

http://www.facebook.com/iamsujeet Sujeet Haldkar

yes agree ..all credit goes to those tv commercials. I think nokia should also come up with some ads which showss appsand features of their phones instead of just dance or logo.

http://twitter.com/Hdrules Hradayesh Nimavat

Tv commercials and also I think consumers buy whatever phones which run android so yes Nokia India would need to come up with more promotions and ads

http://www.facebook.com/people/Duncan-Wynn-Jr/100002258876487 Duncan Wynn Jr.

Not too impressed ..

http://www.facebook.com/iamsujeet Sujeet Haldkar

I dont get the point of making this phone as the specs are same to Asha 309.

http://mobihalo.wordpress.com/ Ayush Mathur

not exactly the same… it has dual sim, 309 haven’t….. to add, its like 308 & 309 combined!!! ie. dual sim+wifi-3g…..

http://www.facebook.com/iamsujeet Sujeet Haldkar

oh ok so it is 309 with dual sim..but again they could’ve made it Asha 309 with optional dual sim(just like they did with Nokia 206) support instead of a 310.

Vikas Patidar

It’s 2013 and still you don’t have any single feature-phone or Smartphone with 3G and Dual SIM together.

While 310 is decent with it’s price but still Asha Touch phones don’t have many options like :

1) Text Selection, CUT, COPY & PASTE.

2) Custom Brightness Control for display.

3) Lock Screen Timeout configuration.

4) Message and Call Blocking

5) Mobile Tracker.

6) Schedule SMS.

I don’t know why Nokia Engineers are so much ignorant on not implementing such very basic features required for daily lifestyle. Believe me those mentioned features are coming in other companies phones since 2009 and still Nokia phones can not do such silly things and they proudly call it SMARTPHONE.

I have seen many of my colleagues and friends always whine for such features and moved to other brands.

Asha phones need to address these features. So that user can take more advantages of Smartphone in a very basic featurephone.

http://twitter.com/stephanemassey Stephane Massey

wow, would love to try this out on my travels.

Published by Boc Ly on January 30, 2013

TweetThe Windows Phone 7.8 update is beginning its rollout to phones currently running on Windows Phone 7.5. You can transform your Nokia Lumia with a host of exciting new personalisation features, such as the ability to resize your tiles, new lock screen options, and more theme colours.

Windows Phone 7.8 has already been shipping pre-loaded on the Nokia Lumia 510 and other phones in the Nokia Lumia family, with users delighted by the new features.

And now, following extensive software testing, update notifications will begin to appear for Nokia Lumia 510, 610, 710, 800 and 900 owners with an unlocked phone or operator approved software during February.

Starting today and rolling out over the coming weeks, a message will appear on the phone encouraging users to get the update. Simply connect your phone to your computer via Zune for PC, or the Windows Phone app for Mac – and follow the onscreen instructions as shown in the video above.

More tiles, features and signature experiences

As well as major system updates, there has been a stream of exciting new features introduced to Nokia Lumia. These include Internet sharing, Bluetooth sharing, imaging enhancements like Camera Extras, and the release of apps such as Contact Share, Play To and Nokia City Lens that are available.

With Windows Phone 7.8 installed, your Nokia Lumia gets even better.

The Start screen experience is completely refreshed with the ability to re-size your tiles: small, medium and large.

In addition, there are also new options available on your lock screen, such as having a daily background image from Bing; plus there’s improved pocket and child lock screen security.

Plus, there is increased language support, meaning even more people get to enjoy Nokia Lumia.

These new benefits, together with the new look Start screen, will make your Lumia feel like a brand new smartphone.

Availability

The Windows Phone 7.8 update is now rolling out for Nokia Lumia smartphones through February. Delivery of the update is operator dependent, meaning you will receive a notification in the coming weeks if you have an unlocked phone or if your operator has approved the update. If you don’t receive the update notification within the next three weeks, please contact your operator for more information.

In the meantime, you can ensure that you don’t miss out on the update, by checking that notifications are enabled on your phone. Go to Settings > Phone Update > “Notify me when new updates are found”.

I understand that the update is going to come to users in several waves. Meaning that the majority will not see the update today, but in a few days/weeks.
I was wondering… is there a way for us to find out in which wave our awesome lumia’s will receive the update?
And, just because I’m impatient, could we “force” something to be part of the first wave anyway? :P

Ahmed Mustafa Nematallah

of course, but you’ll ruin your warranty

http://www.facebook.com/ipariszalonna Tamás Juhász

Check WPCentral for a safe way to “force” the update. You can trick Zune into thinking that you are worthy of the update even if Nokia/Microsoft decided otherwise :D Several people confirmed that it works and it won’t void your warranty.

This is such a let down. Bought my L710 in June last year. 7.8 bits shown in July. Great, I though. Only I had to wait another few months before getting Tango which wasn’t even 7.8. Then waited some more. And then some more. In the meantime I waited for Audible app. Then for Paypal app. For any reasonable non-nokia app in fact. Then 7.8 was imminent. So I waited. End of January. It’s only out today because January doesn’t have more days in it. Pretty sure you’d make me wait more if it did. In fact you do. As Zune finds NO updates. So it will be another few weeks.
Good job I bough a Galaxy S3 a few months back and now only check for L710 updates for laugh.
I’ll check on Windows Phone in a couple of years. Maybe by then the big wait will be coming to an end.
Shame. I had big hopes. And the 7.8 mess put me off WP8, too. Pretty sure it’s the same story there. If not now – wait until MS promises an “imminent” upgrade.

chris_t610

I hate to be a party pooper, but I am about to break away from Nokia and my Lumia 800. I have been waiting for this update for ages that Im now tired to even connect my phone to my pc and check.

I know this is not Nokia’s fault at all, but honestly, I think Nokia was better off when it was independent.

I have been using my N8 for nearly 2 years and in those 2 years I lost count of the many updates Nokia has provided it. And these were major update,. not just some new tiles or themes.

Heck, even my E72 was updated sooo many times compared to this WP.

This was a very hard lesson for me. Frankly, I was always a Nokia fan through and through and I would love to see my next purchase as another Nokia.

But with the current platform Nokia has supported, I think I am better off with the competition.

And in as much as it breaks a part of me to part ways with the Brand I so loved through the years, it will be a very hard decision that took many years to make.

http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1198150213 Joe Murray

Really, have you seen the abysmal rate of updates from Android devices?
As far as update rates, how often do you think there really needs to be one? MS has one every 6 months, Apple every year.

chris_t610

Yup, I have seen updates from across other OSes.

My point is that WP was designed to be too minimalistic. Aside from the added applications from WP8, there aren’t any notable differences from 7.5 as well.

I respect your perception towards WP, all I am saying is that ever since I adopted the platform it fell short of my expectations (especially I am coming from Symbian).

I would agree that WP will eventually improve in time, but that may also translate to current WP8 devices being left out in the cold just like 7.5 and no major differences in functionality.

Oh, and I am not about to proceed to other platforms for now. I’d rather stick it out with my N8 until a bright perspective comes along.

Dogma Hunter

The break from wp7 to 8 was due to a new kernel and the hardware requirement changes because of that. There’s no reason at all to assume that this story will repeat itself.
Consider how a lot of XP pc’s weren’t able to upgrade to Vista because of similar hardware incompatibilities.
All those who were a bit informed on the matter also knew this when they were buying their 7.x device.
I think you’ll find that the competition at this point is a lot worse.
Android is about the most fragmented system out there (logical result of allowing phone makers to mess with the code) and Apple has got an invested interest in making you buy new iphones all the time, since that is how they make money. There won’t be any “7.8?-like stories on iDevices… they’ll just tell you to cough up another 600 bucks.
Just saying…

chris_t610

Let’s suppose for a minute that what you said are correct, but the damage has been done isn’t it? No doubt that Nokia have been building fantastic devices, only to be dictated by the OS maker.

News of this 7.8 update has been circling the web since September and there were even some folks who were lucky to be enjoying it even before the official release.

But let’s not dwell in the past anymore since the update’s already here. Then we begin to ask: what’s new?

Oh look new tiles and colors and…?

Where is the screenshot that was said to be part of the update?

Was MS kind enough to include a file manager this time?

Bluetooth transfer…?

And the questions keep coming in…

At the end of thr day, the so called major update wasn’t major in features after all — way to go Ballmer and co.!

So let me ask; was the long wait even worth it of what the updates changed?

If you say ‘yes’ then Im happy for you.

As for me, I’ve had enough of MS.

I agree that the competition isn’t doing very well themselves. But in this case, Im choosing the lesser evil.

Dogma Hunter

Here’s the difference between you and me…
When I bought my Lumia, I didn’t expect it to get ANY kind of upgrade. Updates, yes (in the sense of support and bugfixes).
So ANYTHING they throw at me was a nice unexpected surplus.
When I buy a phone, or indeed any device, I buy it as-is. I don’t buy it thinking “yeah, that thing will be awesome in 2 years”.
Frankly, I don’t get all the whining about this.
It’s damned if they do and damned if they don’t.
Would you rather have your Lumia transformed into a fiasco like the “vista ready” xp machines back in the day?
In short, my humble opinion on the matter is “get over it”.
Go ask an android user how the latest version of android is working out for him. Or go ask an iPhone 4 user the same question about iOs.
I’ld rather have my phone stay usable and with good performance rather then to receive a crippling update that is even completely pointless because I don’t have the hardware required for as good as all the new features.

chris_t610

I am over it, that’s why I am leaving the platform right?

I have a device from the other side of the pond that will be stuck on 4.1, but I never complained co’z everything that I need are there.

Now if you’re contented with this side then fine by mean, I couldn’t care less. Bottomline is Im done with MS.

http://www.facebook.com/ipariszalonna Tamás Juhász

Apple never did “7.8? like stories because they made sure newer ios versions are running on 2-3 generation old devices too. With all the important improvements. Nokia and Microsoft should have tried harder wiith the 7.8 update becasuse it seems a bit lackluster to say the least. (btw I’am a happy user of a Lumia800, what’s there is great but there are significant downgrades compared to simbian)

I feel a bit cheated too. owned this phone for less than a year and it is already out of date and unable to be updated to latest version. a new start screen doesn’t really cut it.

http://twitter.com/dalydose Jeff Daly

What else did you want that isn’t hardware dependent?

http://www.facebook.com/ipariszalonna Tamás Juhász

Offline navigation outside of Drive. Nokia claims it’s impossible on 7.x but I don’t buy it. It’s just lazy.

http://twitter.com/dalydose Jeff Daly

If you’re that finicky, you’ll be back after you see the grass ain’t always greener, my friend.

no thanks, I’ve had it with MS. :-)

I want? to know only one – are music and all audio equalizer is

you can make ringtones by making sure the sound your using is less than 1gb.. and an MP3 then right click into the sound and change the genre to the word ringtone and download it.. then the damned phone recognises it and lets u use it… hope it helps and you dont then need a ringtone creater at all

http://twitter.com/dalydose Jeff Daly

Nice. I have it on my Lumia 900 (forced with tip from WPCentral). I’m glad that I haven’t yet sold this device because it was a great backup since I bricked my Lumia 920 and had to get a warranty replacement. It’s now restoring. I also love the music experience with my 900 and Zune. It works with all of my Zune music and playlists. Xbox Music needs work and that’s what I’m forced to use with the 920.

So all that to say, WOO HOO, the 920 got updated!!

blegs38552

I am a T-Mobile subscriber – Lumia 710 in the USA. No update yet. I am reluctant to try and force the update – hopefully, it will not be long in coming. I read that there were some API changes – any chance that these will enable a software developer to give us the Screen Capture feature that we are all asking for> I know that this was available for unlocked phones at the XDA-Developers forum, so it will work with our hardware. Just a question of someone building it and putting it in the Windows Phone store for us. Also, a battery level tile would be a good thing – also available for Windows Phone 8 phones.

But it’s still baffling. Why alienate and anger so many potential loyal followers ?

I’m still sad that no Windows Phone 8 is available for your Windows Phone 7 devices. The availability of Windows Phone 8 for the HTC HD2 shows that it is technically possible.

But the thing that frustrates me most is that most apps made for Windows Phone 8 will not run on our Windows Phone 7 devices so that we cannot expect many more apps to flow into the 7 Marketplace :-(

Miles McCarthy

We have found a way to install Windows Phone 8 OS on to single core phones by our university researches. We implemented this on Lumia 710 and 800 series. But we have to disable some feature on WP8 which provides good sync. between threads and processes on real WP8 phones. However, we made it. We are testing the phones for 4 days, and we never been crashed.

We can never use dual core advantages but, by switching between processes so fast provides us a dual-core-like environment. (This slows down our application nearly %10 because of context switchings between processes, but cheats OS to think it is processing on a dual core processes.) Nevertheless, we can use the OS fully functional with applications and everything.

We will update you how to do that, pray for us not to things go bad.

I suppose Mirrorlink support is still too much to ask though……

I would like to know if in the future I’ll be able to take a screenshot with my Lumia 800. It would be a useful tool.
Another question: if I need to send a PDF file by mail how can i do?
Sorry for my terrible English.

http://artemyev.biztoolbox.ru Andrey Artemyev

Extremely agree with you. Possibility to send photos only is a big fail from WP. Also, neither screenshots not ringtone maker in WP 7.8. Very disappointing!

http://www.facebook.com/ipariszalonna Tamás Juhász

they never said there will be a screenshot function so I’m pretty sure they won’t bother with it in the future. Nokia really wants us to throw away our less than a year old phones and buy WP8 devices.

disqus_1Sy7CQaHXI

sorry for the stupid question, but here it is, when the new update will come out?

You shouldn’t ask for help here. My comment got deleted that explained how to update. Nokia and Microsoft really made a mess regarding this update…

yogesh_gamer

I am Updating my Lumia 710. And it doesn’t show whats it installing. Just “nokia update for windows phone”. You should mention full detail about updates in zune. So that we can understand what is happening to our phone.

My Nokia Lumia 800 is now 2 days old and already I hate what it CANT do… its boxed up ready for collection as my provider agrees its not acceptable and will take it back and dump it on Nokia.. its not acceptable saying some people will get an upgrade and others wont.. depending on the carrier…. sorry but its a Nokia.. and the upgrade was to FIX some of the things thats wrong with it.. who cares who supplied it.. Nokia’s name is on the box and the phone.. and they know 7.5 is defective.. Zune is a joke.. simply give everyone who spent their hard earned cash on a ‘not so cheap phone’ the right to an update.. I have only ever had nokia’s since the days of the 2510.. 3330.. and so on.. and this is the first nokia i have hated.. where is the linked hands.. the icons.. the ****ing bluetooth! the larger fonts… ie: all the basics…the stuff that made Nokia its name??? and a suggestion to fix it.. put symbian on the 800 and throw windows in the skip.. then we wont have to deal with xbox techies in Zune who frankly either dont know or dont care about mobile phone owners.. they read from a script and dont have a clue.

Ever since I upgraded my Lumia 900, all of my news tiles have stopped updating: AP Mobile, USA Today, Boomberg, CNN. Essentially the update apparently has broken major phone functionality. Is anyone else having this issue? For the Nokia folks, is this an acknowledged issue, and if so, when will it be fixed?

vel

Guys Just now i updated Nokia Lumia 710 to Win7.8. Now marketplace is not working. Need some help regarding this..
