Big step forward for European graphene initiative

Category : , , , 0

When you think of graphene, you think of a new super-material that dreams, and the future, are made of.

Today, ‘the future’ just got a little more present, thanks to news that the Graphene Flagship Consortium, a collection of industry and academic partners – including Nokia – looking to improve the world using graphene, was chosen by the European Union for the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) program, triggering an investment of 1 billion euros that will be spread over the next 10 years.

Measuring only one atom thick, graphene is classed as a 2D structure with super-useful properties. While thin, it’s also the strongest material ever tested, having a breaking strength 300 times greater than steel. Oh, and it’s also the lightest and best intrinsic conductor, too.

The Graphene Flagship Consortium currently consists of 74 partners from the EU, from many different sectors. Nokia is flying the flag for the electronics corner, as well as the mobile one, with realistic dreams of improving the industry.

When asked about why Nokia is researching graphene and why this consortium is vital, Henry Tirri, EVP, CTO of Nokia explained:

“Nokia is proud to be involved with this project, and we have deep roots in the field – we first started working with graphene already in 2006. Since then, we have come to identify multiple areas where this material can be applied in modern computing environments. We’ve done some very promising work so far, but I believe the greatest innovations have yet to be discovered.”

“Graphene happens to be an area where we, in Europe, have all the important players in the value chain who are ready to use it in applications. From that perspective, this is a very efficient and promising way of doing research investments for Europe.”

Tapani Ryhänen, Head of the Sensor and Material Technologies Laboratory at Nokia also told us that:

“During the last 18 months we have seen a tremendous effort to build collaboration between European academia and industry. Now we have all the ingredients in place to be globally successful. We believe that new two-dimensional materials will have an impact on industrial value chains in many ways, creating opportunities for new products, services and economic growth.”

According to figures compiled by CambridgeIP, a UK-based patent consultancy, Asia and the USA are leading in terms of the number of patent publications, even though graphene was pioneered in Britain.

What is graphene?

This EU consortium is designed to boost research opportunities and to put the EU right in the heart of development. Jani Kivioja, Research Leader at Nokia Research Center, explains that it also has wider implications:

“Not only does creating a graphene research consortium open up new research possibilities, it will also create work and jobs across all of Europe. This kind of research is also an investment to the people that live within the EU, from an economy perspective.

“Globalisation has taken a lot of manufacturing out of the EU, whereas many countries still rely on industrial manufacturing. There is a huge opportunity to bring manufacturing back here, while using new materials and at the same time keeping manufacturing industries competitive,” continues Tapani.

Although graphene has received lots of media attention over the past few weeks, especially in the UK, as Henry mentioned, Nokia has been working with nanotechnologies since 2006, mostly from the Nokia Research Centre based in Cambridge, UK, and also with teams in Finland and Russia. You could say that we’ve been involved from the beginning, and there’s a good reason, Jani says:

“When we talk about graphene, we’ve reached a tipping point. We’re now looking at the beginning of a graphene revolution. Before this point in time, we figured out a way to manufacture cheap iron that led to the Industrial Revolution. Then there was silicon. Now, it’s time for graphene.”

Tapani notes that we shouldn’t expect to see everything made out of graphene. Instead, it’s all about improving existing materials and products to make them even better than before:

“Making products out of graphene will definitely happen across lots of different industries. By introducing people from different markets together within the EU-based consortium, we can begin to make real-world applications that benefit us all.

“Really, this type of technology has radically improved the properties of many materials that can be used in our industry. It was discovered in the EU, and we’re very proud to have been involved from the very early years and now to be participating in the consortium. We have a very functional research team in place that can do world-class research with our partners.

“We have kept our eyes open, and believe that this will bring immediate impact to our products over the coming years in some way or another.”

TweetEnjoying Nokia Music on your Lumia, and want more of it? You’re in luck. Nokia today announces Nokia Music+, which brings a slew of new and richer options for a low monthly subscription fee of €3.99/$3.99.

For those that love the original free Mix Radio service, it will remain intact – this is all about adding extra.

Jyrki Rosenberg, VP Entertainment at Nokia, told us, “People love Nokia Mix Radio – in fact, many people are amazed that we can offer it for free.

“It’s the only smartphone music service out there offering access to millions of songs out of the box without the need to sign up, sign in, or suffer adverts in between enjoying the music. When you add in the ability to skip songs and save playlists for offline uses like the tube, you have something unique.

“We spend a lot of time listening to how people use the service and have even managed to half the amount of skips per songs played, which is a combination of our systems and musicologists understanding and shaping Nokia Music around the users.

“Nokia Music is great for discovering new music, and we’ve found that there’s a core of users that want even more of it. This is how Nokia Music+ came about. By introducing features like infinite skips and unlimited downloads, we’re opening the doors for unlimited music discovery at only €3.99 per month.

“This is for people who care enough about music to pay something for more quality and choice, but don’t want to pay €9.99 monthly.”

So what do you get?

Unlimited skips. Whether you like to skip from track to track, or just want extra control over what you hear. There’s no stopping you with Nokia Music+.

Unlimited downloads. The free service allows you to download up to four Mixes (each of which contains hours of music) and play them without an Internet connection. The paid service removes this limit – you can download a massive supply of offline music you can swap as you wish.

Higher quality. We were surprised by the high quality of streaming music from Nokia Music, even over a 2.5G connection. Nokia Music+ allows you to download music at eight times the existing quality. Plus, you can set rules to only download high quality when you’re on WiFi, for example.

Lyrics. Words to the songs you’re listening to, right on your Nokia Lumia. Either in a scrolling list, Karaoke-style format, or a display you can scroll up and down.

On your desktop. The Nokia Music+ subscription also gives you access to the service without your phone. A web-app gives you the ability to play Mixes on your computer, smart TV or other connected screens.

Nokia Music+ will roll out in the next few weeks. The price will vary slightly according to territory, but is expected be available at around €3.99/$3.99 per month.

great! I have an XBox music pass and I absolutely love it. But the discovery aspect of Nokia music gives me the opportunity to find songs from artists I didn’t even know before.

I just wish the catalogue would become bigger as its big enough but not very big. Another aspect that could help is if you offer a “heart” button next to the song that people are listening to to signal like or dislike. That way you can easily give people a chance to filter their music and tell you what they like and what they hate.

Skipping works for dislike and “download more from this artist” works for like but its a very cluncky solution. Sometimes people don’t want to waste a skip just in order to signalize “I don’t like this”…

anyway, great music service.

http://twitter.com/kps91 Kunwar Preet Singh

so this and nokia music unlimited(NMU) subscription will go side by side?

http://twitter.com/BLAZEMONGER Paul van der Heu

Doubt it, NMU is what’s offered in India.

http://twitter.com/kps91 Kunwar Preet Singh

NMU is just in india? no other country?

http://www.facebook.com/simon.bull.33 Simon Bull

It’s also available in China.

XB_Mod

it used to be available in a lot of countries but due to lack of interest they reduced the support to China and India I think.

http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003693923679 Ayush LP Mathur

NMU only offers Unlimited download from store, and reading this, I guess this add-on is only for Mix radio, and not for Music Store, so they will go parallel, buy NMU for store and this NM+ for Mix Radio. But alas problem is still there, we cant download High Quality songs from Nokia Music Store, and hardly few people save mix radio for of online, so what’s the need oh High quality Mix radio download, it gonna be a disappointment in India if I am right.

Sven

Be kind to your neighbour Sweden and let us be 1 of the countries that gets it first

http://www.clubnokiard.com/ Frankie Bloise

I will be glad to pay for this, specially since I will be able to play my music not only in my Lumia but in my PC and my SmartTV!

http://conversations.nokia.com/ Adam Fraser

That’s one feature I’ve been waiting for, too.

http://twitter.com/FdoCortesM Fernando Cortés

I have a Nokia Lumia 710 and in my country (Chile) and probably all of Latin America we don’t even have Nokia Music. It was one of the features I was looking forward the most…

http://www.clubnokiard.com/ Frankie Bloise

mostly due to licensing issues with local companies… I remember when living in Dominican republic, sometimes CD’s and even Movies were handled by local companies and the movies got there months later. See Netflix’s example, the Latin America Netflix has a very poor movie selection compared to US, Canada or even Europe.

http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003693923679 Ayush LP Mathur

amazing, its cool, I was waiting for feature to download high quality tracks on my phone. Just a bit of confusion, is it only for lumia or will it be available for Symbian phones too. actually I use nokia 700 for music purpose as it have Dolby enhancements but not my Lumia 610, oh BTW, it is for WP7.8 devices too, right?
and at last, a suggestion, please improve the way we search or better say Discover music on Nokia Music. Nevertheless, its a great service by Nokia . :)

Admin, I need your reply please…..

@AdFraser:disqus Admin, I need your reply please…..

http://twitter.com/mazzeger Mazze

I also like Nokia Music, but to be honest, whenever I come across a good song I add it to my playlist at a competitors subscription service. Why not introduce unlimited downloads of the songs you actually like like Spotify allows you to do? Call it Nokia Music Unlimited or something like that and charge the same price. I’m positive you would get quite a few subscriptions.

http://twitter.com/jmrolenc Jan Martin Rolenc

Will the service be available in the Czech Republic?

http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003635518214 Gustav Christensson

So that’s the reason behind the “Standard Quality” label in Nokia Music…

http://mobihalo.wordpress.com/ Ayush Mathur

is that song not saving problem solved?

http://www.facebook.com/sushovan.majumdar Sushovan Majumdar

Please tell me if this will work on Nokia Lumia 920 which I bought from Dubai & using in India? cause right now nokia music is not working. Only it plays my own songs. I don’t see the mix radio options. PLease let me know.

rynkx

I think you might need to re-authorize your device. I’m also using a Dubai bought phone in India and I can use the full feature-set in Nokia Music app. If you were already using Nokia Music on another mobile device (WP7.5 or even symbian), then you have to go to the Nokia Music website and replace you previous device’s IMEI with your current one. Thats what I had to do before it would start working.

http://www.facebook.com/sushovan.majumdar Sushovan Majumdar

I was not using nokia music earlier. Can you please let me know how to go about this? Customer care didn’t help . Please provide me the steps so that i can use all features of nokia music.

Francois Magny

Oh yeah, I would pay for this. I also pay for a Zune Pass/ Xbox Music pass but the Windows Phone 8 implementation of the service is, well, a downgrade from Windows Phone 7. Anywho… bring this service to Canada.

semo

???? ???????? ??

kevin

Obviously this will not be coming to Canada since your previous nokia music isn’t in Canada. Thanx a lot!

http://twitter.com/Hdrules Hradayesh Nimavat

Nice to see finally Nokia music updating to 320 kbps quality I guess though I hope Nokia music and Microsoft will provide music in flac format one day….

maharshi83

Hi my Nokia music no longer working it just shows my music and settings.I tried re installing and even restored to factory settings and re installed still the same issue.I can’t see any mix radio or gigs offline music in the menu.I am trying to take this issue to blogs no body cares.Nokia please do take care.

vmgunz

Great!! Love Nokia Music – Mix Radio. Will it be available in Singapore??

http://www.facebook.com/kristijan.sasilo Kristijan Sašilo

Love it! Unfortunately, can’t enjoy it properly. Please, Nokia. You should offer this service to every country where you sell (officially) Lumia devices. It only hurts you and the entire platform if the service is fragmented. Same goes to Microsoft and their Xbox services. I live in Croatia and I would GLADLY pay for either Xbox Music Pass or Nokia Music+. My Windows Phone is sad and lonely without all these cloud multimedia services and my Windows Phone experience is not complete.

http://www.facebook.com/omonrise Arseny Starostin

I guess its not that Nokia isn’t trying too, just in many countries the lable organizations are reallllyyyy hard to deal with

jiipee

Nokia, where is the n9 version? You promoted the device heavily here on Conversations and L800 did not arrive that much later, but it had the service on board.

Is this the same Jyrki, former head of Meego, who emailed:

“I am pleased to confirm that we will continue to support N9. We will be putting out another SW release and even after that there will be support as needed.
Best regards,
Jyrki Rosenberg
Head of MeeGo”

hysonmb

I’ve got a 1 year Xbox Music Pass right now and due to the horrid experience they released for managing music / media I may just call that a loss and jump on with Nokia Music+.

rajavelu_v

+1for nokia music +

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/ Mauricio Freitas

Well, not very excited since it wasn’t available in New Zealand before, it’s not available now.

rasa.jitu

Same thing goes here in Malaysia..screwed….

http://www.facebook.com/dannyjsteiger Danny Steiger

LOVE IT. I have been so frustrated with the lack of Spotify on WP8, and the xbox music experience has been a nightmare. I’m also hoping that we can download individual songs, as opposed to mixes?

From these individual songs hopefully we can make our own playlists (mixing genres, etc).

Thank you Nokia for doing such a great job of supporting your hardware with amazing software solutions. You have created a loyal customer through all of this.

Jeremy

Exactly. I recently discontinued my Spotify Premium account because I can’t get it on my 920. I really hope we can get individual tracks, or even whole CD downloads, and not just mixes…

Stomp949

Please create an RT app for Surface owners.

Cosimo

Awesome news, but can Canada get in on the Nokia music action?

manoj252

Please include Canada this time around.

some love for Taiwan please!

Im buying !

Feature on prime-time US TV by becoming the Next App Star

Category : , , 0

If you’re a developer – or wannabe developer – on the Windows Phone 8 platform, now is a great time to publish that app to the Windows Phone Store. The Windows Phone Next App Star competition is now open and could see your app making an appearance in an advertisement on prime-time TV in the USA.

While the grand prize is your app featuring on US TV, the competition is open to developers worldwide.

To participate, you must be a registered developer with at least one app in the Windows Phone Store and have published something to at least one country. Your content doesn’t have to be brand new, older apps have as much a chance of winning as new ones.

You’ll also need to ‘opt-in‘, so make sure you login to do that; otherwise you’ll not be entered.

Initially, the Windows Phone team will judge all the app submissions based on an equal weighting of user ratings and app quality, including your implementation of new Windows Phone 8 features, such as Live Tiles. This is to stop people cheating and getting their friends to give 5-star ratings in the hope of being picked.

The best way to ensure you’re apps are chosen is to make the absolute most of what Windows Phone 8 has to offer. Create an app as rich as possible. Create a Live Tile that looks amazing on the Start screen. Utilise SkyDrive so that people can upload or download files. Or, make use of the HERE platform to provide the most accurate location experience possible.

Whatever you decide to use or create, it must run on Windows Phone 8. However, why not have it run on both Windows Phone 7.5 and 8 for extra brownie points?

Once the Windows Phone team have picked the appropriate apps, they’ll then narrow that list down to just 64 to go head-to-head in bracket-style competition. This will then be open to public voting.

Over the following several of weeks, the public will vote, whittling down the entries to 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, and ending with just one winner, taking home the grand prize of the U.S. TV ad slot and the title of the Next App Star.

Additional prizes will be on offer throughout the contest to encourage people to participate. There will be thousands of dollars worth in prizes up for grabs for the developers of the 64 apps; including a Nokia Lumia 920, featured promotion in the Windows Phone Store and a one-year free Dev Center subscription.

Even if you don’t win, the exposure of your apps in the competition itself may still see you gaining new fans and some extra money from new app purchases.

App submission ends on 5th March, and the public voting ends 8th April, 2013. Remember, you’ll need to opt-in to take part – your apps won’t automatically be entered.

Check out the official rules or the Windows Phone Developer Blog for more details.

Will you be taking part?

NFL Playbooks: There’s an App for That

Category : , 0

video

If you watched “Hard Knocks” on HBO this summer, then you already know that the phrase “turn in your iPads” has started replacing “turn in your playbooks” when players are cut from an NFL team.

Want a competitive advantage? As NFL teams are discovering, there’s an app for that. Across the league, teams are trading in their 500-page printed playbooks for iPads.

In the last year alone, NFL teams using the iPad have quadrupled from three to 12, representing more than one-third of all teams. Those who make the switch are discovering that the technology goes far beyond the old playbook capabilities.

PlayerLync is at the forefront of the movement, and is currently being used by five NFL teams: the Denver Broncos, Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, Cincinnati Bengals and San Diego Chargers.

Those using PlayerLync report that it has revolutionized the way they push out film and significantly altered the way they communicate. The technology is such a leap forward that other teams are even considering making the iPad switch in midseason.

The Broncos were one of the early adopters of the technology. Since making the switch, team members, IT and video staff say they can’t imagine returning to the old way.

"It changes the way you prepare," says Broncos tight end Jacob Tamme. "You can come off the practice field, get in the cold tub and watch film in the cold tub on your iPad."

[+] Enlarge
Falcons PlaybookAP Photo/Scott BoehmThe huge, printed playbook may soon become obsolete. In addition to saving printing costs, digital playbooks like PlayerLync are increasing effective, real-time communication by allowing coaches and quarterbacks to add and share plays with the click of a button.

Every time new data, film or information is added, a banner alert pops up (like a text message), signaling players to view the updates.

And if they don’t log in? Coach could know, thanks to optional modules that can track when and how long a player views a play or file. There are also options that update calendars, ensuring the whole team remains on the schedule.

But the real benefit of PlayerLync might be with game film.

Prior to the app, in Denver, for example, sharing practice film was not so streamlined.

“They had to come in, sit down at a computer and look at video that way. Or they had to look at tape and they had to be at a big machine to look at that tape. Now, it’s right on the iPad,” says Russ Trainor, VP of IT for the Broncos.

Now, the film is literally in the palms of players’ hands immediately following practice. Say a team is playing on the road: Once the game ends and they’re headed home, the video teams can be uploading film while players’ apps are downloading it in the TSA line, ready for them to watch on the plane.

Mind you, you won't find PlayerLync alongside Doodle Jump or Bejeweled for 99 cents in Apple's App Store. It’s a private, “full-solution app,” according to Bob Paulsen, CEO and founder of PlayerLync.

Paulsen says that the idea for the app sprung from a conversation at a barbecue with a Broncos staff executive in late fall of 2011.

With a background in telecom -- Paulsen sold his previous business to Bill Gates -- he knew the right people who could make the app happen.

“You can’t create this kind of platform without the extensive background we have,” says Paulsen.

Still, that background didn’t prepare him for the app’s instant appeal. Paulsen says it wasn’t until late in the game that he had to make an outbound call to sell the app -- marketing was entirely done by word-of-mouth.

Manning/FoxJim Rogash/Getty ImagesFox and Manning have joined the iPad revolution. In fact, when the Broncos agreed to get on board with the platform, Paulsen had yet to set a price. “I asked them what they thought it would be worth,” says Paulsen. They came up with a price together.

Not long after, rather than keep the tech advantage to themselves, the Broncos actually helped spread the word to other teams.

“It was a day before the combine and we realized we needed a few minutes away from development and get our website up. The next day we were meeting with teams [at the combine], and they were quickly receptive to the solution,” says Paulsen.

And for security? No one wants an iPad-gate. NFL teams can feel safe using PlayerLinc. Without getting too nerdy, Paulsen says there are 10 layers of security. Given the data sensitivity, the apps are highly encrypted, and each iPad can be remotely wiped clean if, for example, a player loses his device or is traded to another team.

These days, everyone seems to want a piece of the PlayerLync founder: Both the Broncos and the Rockies have offered Paulsen on-site office space and he’s been approached by hockey, basketball and baseball teams that are interested in the app.

Why is it so popular? According to Paulsen, the reviews from players and coaches have been universally positive.

Broncos coach John Fox says PlayerLync is not just fast, it’s easy to use. “(The players) can download from afar and the turnover happens faster, so the production of our video, in particular, is much more efficient," says Fox. "Even us older guys are becoming more comfortable."

Denver quarterback Peyton Manning says the app makes it easier for the video guys to dispatch footage to different players, giving them no excuse not to study game film. And Chargers QB Philip Rivers appreciates the fact that the app allows for instant revisions -- if a route is changed, it can be immediately updated on the app without the need for printing out a new page and manually adding to a playbook.

And as of late, the app could get even more efficient. That is, if teams take advantage of the latest iteration of the iPad and the new iPad mini, both recently unveiled.

The new devices have double the Wi-Fi speed, which means pushing out game film and content event faster or having an even more portable device, via the smaller mini.

Will teams upgrade now, or wait for the next model?

Welcome to the consumer dilemma, NFL.

iPhone 5 is Time Magazine’s ‘Gadget of the Year’

Category : , , 0

APPLE

Apple may be responsible for more than its share of the tech industry’s great leaps forward, but it’s at least as good at fussing over the tiny little details other companies ignore. The iPhone 5, which starts at $199 with a two-year contract, is one of the most artfully polished gadgets anyone’s ever built, with a taller screen than previous iPhones built into a thinner, lighter case. The camera, with a particularly well-done panorama mode, is another highlight. There are lots of nifty smartphones out there, including the iPhone’s impressive archrival, Samsung’s Galaxy S III. But when it comes to melding hardware, software and services so tightly that the seams fade away, Apple still has no peer.

App Store Tops 40 Billion Downloads with Almost Half in 2012

Category : , , , 0

CUPERTINO, California?January 7, 2013?Apple® today announced that customers have downloaded over 40 billion apps*, with nearly 20 billion in 2012 alone. The App Store? has over 500 million active accounts and had a record-breaking December with over two billion downloads during the month. Apple’s incredible developer community has created over 775,000 apps for iPhone®, iPad® and iPod touch® users worldwide, and developers have been paid over seven billion dollars by Apple.

“It has been an incredible year for the iOS developer community,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “Developers have made over seven billion dollars on the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world.”

In 2012, the husband and wife team at Imangi Studios saw their game Temple Run downloaded more than 75 million times; Backflip Studios and Supercell, two emerging game development studios, brought in over $100 million combined for their leading freemium titles DragonVale and Clash of Clans; and emerging services including Uber, Flipboard, HotelTonight, and AirBnB attracted millions of users on iOS. Companies including Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Autodesk, Marvel and Major League Baseball continued to expand their iOS offerings, while developers like JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot Interactive and Bottle Rocket Apps continued to push the boundaries of what iOS apps can do.

“The success of our game Temple Run in 2012 was nothing short of astonishing,” said Keith Shepherd, co-founder of Imangi Studios. “We were simply looking to create a game that was fun and easy to play, but once it hit the App Store, the game took off. This past year, we saw more than 75 million downloads of Temple Run on iOS.”

“Our success on iOS has been incredible,” said Samir Hanna, vice president of Consumer Products for Autodesk. “We set off with the modest goal of bringing SketchBook to iPhone users as a way of introducing them to Autodesk. Fast forward three years, we now offer 20 apps to iOS users that have achieved more than 50 million downloads, and we continue to roll out new creativity and design tools that appeal to both professionals and consumers.”

“The App Store provided us with opportunities beyond our wildest dreams,” said Bad Robot Interactive’s JJ Abrams. “Our app Action Movie FX was designed to bring Hollywood special effects to anyone’s self-made video, whether that be on an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, and we’re just thrilled that millions of fans around the world were as excited as we were about the possibilities that this app brings.”

“Bottle Rocket Apps now employs over 100 full-time employees, dedicated to nothing but building great apps,” said Calvin Carter, president of Bottle Rocket Apps. “In my 20 plus years in technology, I have never seen such a vibrant marketplace for software like the App Store.”

PC Mag: iMac is Editor’s Choice

Category : , 0

Viewing Apple's iMac 27-inch (Late 2012) desktop (model MD096LL/A) from the front, it looks at first as if Apple is doing the same thing to the iMac that it did with the Mac mini (Late 2012): updating the internal hardware but leaving the exterior unchanged. The edge-to-edge glass over the display, the wide brushed aluminum "chin" below the display, the single piece aluminum stand—it's clearly an iMac. If looking at it from the front, side by side, the new model would be indistinguishable from last year's iMac, the Apple iMac 27-inch (Thunderbolt). That illusion is broken as soon as you view the iMac from an angle. Suddenly the difference is dramatic—this thing is thin, dropping nearly a full inch at the edges. And the differences are more than skin deep. Thanks to upgraded hardware and a new internal design, the iMac is faster and more responsive, offering larger, smarter storage. It all adds up to be our new Editors' Choice for high-end all-in-one desktops.

Design and Features
From the front, the system looks almost identical to the previous iteration, the Apple iMac 27-inch (Thunderbolt), but you may notice that the display looks a little bit better. The 27-inch panel has the same 2,560-by-1,440 resolution, and a backlit panel with In-Plane Switching (IPS) technology offers clear viewing from 178 degrees, and glowing with up to 300 nits brightness. This isn't all about numbers, though—when compared side-by-side with the Acer Aspire 7600U (A7600U-UR308), the higher resolution display on the iMac is far better to the naked eye.

It also features full lamination construction, removing the two-millimeter gap between the display panel and the glass covering it. Thanks to this lamination process, as well as specialized coatings on the glass, the display is much less reflective than the previous model—75-percent less reflective, according to Apple. Despite the changes, the color is still true-to-life and compatible with professional color calibration tools. Shoppers looking for a touch screen will need to look elsewhere, but it's just as well, because the glass picks up every possible smudge and fingerprint. You'll want to keep a soft cloth handy for wiping off dust and smudges if you tend to move the system around or adjust its angle often.

The chassis is also dramatically thinner. At the tapered edges of the display, the chassis is a mere 0.2 inch thick—thinner than the stand it sits on—and the overall thickness of the iMac has been reduced by almost half. The iMac has the same sturdy aluminum stand seen in past models, but there's still no good way to adjust the monitor height aside from setting it on something higher.

The back of the iMac is curved to accommodate its internal components, but even with this extra thickness, it's still jaw-droppingly thin. A healthy amount of the dropped width can be attributed to the now-absent optical drive. If you're still holding on to software and movies on disc, you'll need to pick up an Apple USB SuperDrive ($79 direct), and it still won't offer Blu-ray playback. For a system with integrated Blu-ray, look to Windows systems like the Asus ET2701INKI-B046C or the former Editors' Choice Dell XPS One 27.

The bottom edge of the iMac is just as thin as the top and sides, but is slotted for ventilation and sound. Integrated speakers provide what Apple calls "higher-fidelity" sound, and by and large, it lives up to the name with vibrant sound and surprisingly rich bass. Apple has touted that the audio offers a larger soundstage, meaning that the area for optimal sound listening is deeper and wider. At the top of the chassis, above the screen, are an HD FaceTime webcam (for capturing video in 720p) and two integrated microphones, which offer clearer voice recording while filtering out ambient noises, like typing and noise in the surrounding room.

The iMac also comes bundled with Apple's Wireless Keyboard and your choice of either the Apple Magic Mouse or Apple Magic Trackpad. If you want both (like we did), you can pick one when you configure your system and add the other for an extra $69 (direct). Both pointing devices also offer support for gesture controls, giving you all of the multiple-finger-gesture controls found in OS X Mountain Lion.

On the back of the system, you'll find the ports and connectors—a stereo minijack, an SDXC card reader, four USB 3.0 ports, two Thunderbolt ports, and Gigabit Ethernet. You may not initially recognize them as USB 3.0 ports, however, because Apple eschews the traditional blue port color and Super-speed logo. Thankfully, with only USB 3.0 ports available, and because they are all USB 2.0 compatible, you won't need to remember which type of device you're using. The two Thunderbolt ports can be used for either blazingly fast data connections or monitor outputs, as they double as mini-DisplayPorts. You can also use the Thunderbolt ports in Target Display mode to view output from a Mac mini, another iMac, or a Thunderbolt-equipped MacBook Pro or Air. For those needing to connect to a monitor via DVI or VGA, adapters are available separately. Also, unlike the Asus ET2701INKI-B046C or the Dell XPS One 27, there is no input for using the iMac as an HDMI monitor, so there's no option of connecting your cable box or game console, so you're limited to what you can get on the Mac App Store, iTunes, or other online services.

The SDXC card reader, which was found alongside the optical drive on the side in previous models has moved. The new position isn't quite as convenient, but it's no more of a hassle than plugging in a USB flash drive. Noticeably absent is any FireWire port. Though it was included on the Mac mini (Late 2012), FireWire has been largely phased out by Apple, as it wasn't included on either the new iMac or the new Retina Display-equipped MacBooks.

Alongside the ports on the back of the iMac, you'll also find a small access panel, which lets you service and upgrade the system memory. To pop it open, all you need to do is remove the power cable and tap a button underneath. While our system came with the standard 8GB of RAM, a total of 4 SO-DIMM slots let you upgrade to a whopping 32GB of DDR3 memory. It's worth noting, however, that between the 27-inch and 21.5-inch models, only the 27-inch iMac is user serviceable in this way. Internally, the iMac is equipped with 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0.

Fusion Drive
Our review unit also came equipped with Apple's 1TB Fusion Drive, which pairs a 1TB hard drive with 128GB of flash storage, automatically shifting programs and files between the two to offer the best performance. This dynamic memory management is done automatically, with only one drive volume to manage, providing all of the performance of a dual-drive setup without the hassle of manually managing your files.

What makes this setup different from hybrid drives, however, is that the Flash storage is not acting as a cache, mirroring data from the drive. Also, the optimization process is ongoing, continuously evaluating each piece of data as it is accessed by the user, shifting it back and forth to maximize performance. Once your iMac gets into a routine and is optimized, this setup can save wear and tear on the spinning hard drive, since oft-used programs and files will eventually reside on Flash storage. All of this work happens in the background, with data evaluated in real time, and shifted to and from the Flash storage during idle times so as not to slow down performance during data intensive actions. For more on the Fusion drive, see our article, 5 Things to Know about Apple's Fusion Drive.

In addition to the 1TB Fusion Drive found in our review unit, the iMac 27-inch can also be equipped with a larger 3TB Fusion Drive, as well as plain 1 or 3TB hard drives, or an all flash memory 768GB solid-state drive.

Mac OS X and Software
As with the Mac mini and the MacBook Pro, the iMac comes with OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8.2 on our review unit) preinstalled on the 128GB flash storage portion of the Fusion Drive for optimum performance. With either the Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad, you'll be able to use a wide array of multi-touch gestures, along with a full roster of programs like iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand. The programs themselves are top-rated, and Mountain Lion itself was picked as one of the best tech products of 2012.

In addition to the operating system and programs, Apple covers the iMac with 90 days of free telephone tech support and a one-year warranty. For extra protection and longer coverage, you can also purchase two more years of AppleCare coverage ($169).

Configuration Options
Our review unit is a slightly different configuration than the pre-configured model that Apple offers for $1,999. In addition to the aforementioned 1TB Fusion Drive (a $250 extra), and the second pointing device ($69 for either the Magic Mouse or Trackpad), our review unit is configured with a 3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor (which added an extra $200 to the price) instead of the standard 3.2GHz Core i5, and swaps out the standard Nvidia GeForce GTX 675MX with 1GB of dedicated memory for the GeForce GTX 680MX with 2GB ($150). These brought the total cost of our review unit to $2,668 when purchased directly from Apple. It should be noted, however, that unlike a desktop tower that allows upgrading over time, the only part of the iMac that can be changed after purchase is the amount of RAM.

Additionally, if you want to expand the amount of memory included with the iMac the standard 8GB can be bumped up to either 16GB ($200) or 32GB ($600), but the user accessible memory slots give you the option of expanding this yourself after purchase.

Performance
Apple iMac 27-inch (Late 2012) With the shift from older Intel Core processors to the faster Ivy Bridge chips—and the upgrade to the 3.4GHz Intel Core i7 quad-core processor found in our review unit—this iMac positively screams, offering the most powerful Mac this side of the workstation-grade Mac Pro. In Cinebench R11.5, our processor speed benchmark test, the iMac scored 7.36 points, rocketing past the under-powered Acer 7600U (2.88 points), easily surpassing the previous iMac (5.10), and leading both the Dell XPS One 27 and Asus ET2701INKI-B046C (7.04 and 7.08, respectively) by a healthy margin.

Apple iMac 27-inch (Late 2012)

It also made short work of our current media tests, plowing through Handbrake in 32 seconds--the Acer Aspire 7600U took 1:16—and Photoshop CS6 in 3 minutes 16 seconds. To get a clearer comparison against the previous iMac, we dusted off our prior Photoshop test (CS5) as well. The new iMac finished in a speedy 3 minutes 8 seconds, while the iMac 27-inch (Thunderbolt) finished the same test in 3:17. For the Mac-friendly designer or videographer, the iMac is still the machine you'll want on your desk.

With an Nvidia GeForce GTX 680MX graphics processor and 2GB of dedicated GDDR5 video memory, the iMac also has some serious gaming chops. In our gaming benchmark, Heaven, the iMac produced 104 frames per second (fps) at 1,366-by-768 resolution, but maintained a playable score of 34 fps even at its native 2,560-by-1,440 resolution and higher detail settings. For optimal performance, you'll want to find a resolution somewhere in between, but with performance like that, you should be able to enjoy any Mac-compatible game you throw at it.

With its beautiful design and quality fabrication, the iMac 27-inch (Late 2012) is the best all-in-one desktop we've ever seen, with a look and feel that manufacturers will be trying to replicate for years. It's not without a few frustrations, like the lack of height adjustment and a price that will give some shoppers a stroke, but there's no denying that the iMac we reviewed—the top spec'ed model of Apple's best configuration—is worth every penny. As a result, it replaces the Dell XPS One 27 as our high-end all-in-one desktop Editors' Choice.

Apple iMac Review: A Reason to Get a Desktop Computer

Category : , , , , 0

You could say that out of all the products Apple has announced in the last few years, its line of desktops have been, well, the least sexy. New iPad? Ahhhh! New iPhone? Where do I line up? But a new desktop? Eh.   In a world where everything is focused on the mobile and where ultrathin laptops suffice as one's main computer, the large and in charge desktops tend to be ignored.

But there's no ignoring Apple's new 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMac, which go on sale today.

A Machine to Display
No, really, no one will ignore it. Even if you aren't a tech enthusiast, this is a machine -- or perhaps sculpture -- you can admire. Just 5mm thick at its edges, the profile of the computer has been trimmed significantly. It's like one of those drastic before-and after-Weight Watchers commercials -- the new iMac obviously being the after. The way after. (Apple says the computer's volume has been reduced 40 percent.)

The guts of the computer sit in a curved, rounded area on the back, making most of the aluminum system look like just a thin display. It's amazingly thin, especially when you think that this isn't just a display like Apple's Thunderbolt display -- this is one of the fastest computers you can buy.

Apple did drop the optical drive on this model -- so no playing DVDs. It does still have an SD card slot, four USB 3.0 ports, two Thunderbolt ports, a MiniDisplay jack, and an Ethernet jack.

While this may be the prettiest all-in-one you can keep on the desk at your house or your cubicle or store (I see a lot of iMacs at small stores), it will actually be the display that you spend the most time looking at. Let me rephrase that: It will actually be the display you don't STOP looking at. The 27-inch 2560 x 1440 display is more eye-pleasing than ever before (the 21.5-inch version has a 1920 x 1080 resolution). While the resolution is still the same on both, Apple has gone to the lengths to apply a new lamination process, bonding the screen and a new coating in a way that reduces reflection by 75 percent.

The result is a uniform viewing experience with much less glare. Even with the sun pouring in from my windows this morning I didn't have to adjust the angle of the display to see all my open programs.

Whether Apple will ever make its own TV remains to be seen, but with the 27-inch iMac with its silver aluminum frame sitting in my apartment, I was consistently drawn away from my 40-inch 1080p TV. Maybe that says something about my TV, but it also says something about Apple's ability to make stunning displays. Looking at photos and HD video on this screen is an immersive experience -- colors are rich and in some images it actually looked as if objects were popping out because of the level of detail. It's not considered a Retina Display (perhaps one day it will get one), but it's hard to imagine it getting even sharper.

Powerful Insides
The last part of the experience is how it actually works as a computer. As you can imagine, my review unit's quad-core 3.4GHz Intel Core i7 processor, 8GB of RAM, Nvidia graphics, and 1TB Fusion drive was able to run the Mountain Lion operating system, several programs (Microsoft Outlook running in Citrix, Tweetdeck, iTunes, Apple's Mail), an HD YouTube video, and a Chrome browser with over 20 webpage tabs open, all with a lot of energy to spare.

The Fusion Drive is an interesting development for Apple -- it takes a fast flash drive and puts it together with a slower but larger regular spinning hard drive. The result is that applications open quickly and overall performance improves, but you still have the space you need for all your files. (I've already expressed how badly I want this technology to come to a laptop in the MacBook Pro with Retina Display review.)

The best part is that it is all invisible to the user. You don't have to think about where you want to put files. It just does it. Apple has built the system with the most powerful desktop parts around -- if you are looking for more details on the deeper performance speeds and feeds, check out The Verge's review.
