We recently introduced LiveSight, a technology based on a highly accurate, 3D map of the world. LiveSight provides the most precise and intuitive augmented reality experience and uses a phone’s camera viewfinder to make discovering the world as easy as lifting up a phone. After type pads, touchscreens and voice recognition, we want sight recognition to be another standard way to interact with the world around you.

Nokia City Lens, exclusively developed for Nokia Lumia devices, is the first application to provide a LiveSight-enabled experience and today we are pleased to announce that we are working on a new version that leverages the full power of this technology.

Because we want you to try these new features before anyone else, we are today making a beta version available for Nokia Lumia 900, Nokia Lumia 800 and Nokia Lumia 710 for you to test and provide feedback for.

With your help we will make Nokia City Lens even better and soon all Nokia Lumia owners, including owners of Nokia Lumia 820 and Lumia 920, will get to enjoy the new features. So let’s see what’s new in Nokia City Lens.

 

The current version of City Lens shows you all the places nearby, even around the corner or a block away. In crowded areas, that can be a lot to take in. Our new Sightline feature lets you switch your view to only what’s in your direct line of sight, making it easier to spot great places that are right in front of you.

Please note that this feature is only available in supported areas, where we have already collected highly accurate, 3D data. In these cases, you will automatically see the filter icon in Nokia City Lens.

When scanning your surroundings in camera view, you can now freeze your view and study your options without having to keep your phone pointed at the target. Just tap and the screen “freezes,” letting you browse the scene more comfortably.

 

Now you can quickly view a place’s address without leaving your camera view. Just tap to view the information overlaid on your display while you keep scanning. When you’re ready to learn more about the place, another tap pulls up complete information of that place.

With this new version of Nokia City Lens we are making good use of the key features in Windows Phone. Nokia City Lens now lets you pin individual categories to your home screen, so you can jump directly to your favourite category searches with just a tap. Art buff? Create a Sights tile. Foodie? Create a Food tile. Wherever you are, you can instantly find what you love.

But you can pin even more than just predefined categories, you can make Nokia City Lens even more personal by pinning your favourite searches to your start screen, whether it’s books or sushi. Wherever you are, you’ll be able to see your closest options within the live tile right on your home screen without even having to launch the app. Just glance and go. Or tap to see what else is nearby.

We’re taking our commitment to regular updates for our location apps very seriously and a good example is Nokia Transport (aka Nokia Transit in North America), which has been recently redesigned with a more intuitive and glance-able interface, specifically for Windows Phone 8. Today we’re also introducing a new beta version of Nokia Transport for Windows Phone 7, with a very similar feature set and design. We are also introducing an update to Nokia Transport for Symbian.

The most obvious update to Nokia Transport is the improved interface – we believe it’s going to be even easier and more intuitive to use. We’ve introduced a new segment map that provides a detailed map view for each part of your route. Just tap or swipe a specific segment of your journey to open a map and a detail view that lets you easily see where you are and where you need to be. Another tap or swipe collapses the view.

Because we know that you might want to plan in advance, for instance when meeting friends for dinner, with the new Nokia Transport for Windows Phone you can do that. Simply enter the date and your departure time in the time picker to view your route options, and then select the route that works best for you. Now you know what time you need to leave, the station you need to get to, and the train you need to catch.

We’re also introducing more options for you to tailor Nokia Transport to your needs. Not only can you now choose to display distances in miles or kilometres, but you can also decide how to be informed about departure times. Some of us like knowing the exact time a train leaves, while others like knowing how much time we have until the train leaves to adjust their walking or departure time. Now you can choose to display departure times either by actual times (e.g. 2:48pm), or relative times (e.g. now or in 13 minutes).

Last but not least, Nokia Transport for Windows Phone now makes it easier to find your previous destinations and lets you easily delete your destination history if you prefer to keep it clean.

If you have a Nokia Lumia with Windows Phone 8, make sure to update Nokia Transport from the Windows Phone Store to the latest version (v 3.0). If you have a Nokia Lumia with Windows Phone 7 and you want to test these new features before anyone else, just go to Nokia Beta Labs and download Nokia Transport beta (v 3.1) now, but don’t forget to provide your precious feedback.

Today, we’re also introducing a beta version of Nokia Transport for Symbian with a better user experience and search function, but most importantly with the ability to get coverage update over the air. This means that you don’t have to download a new application every time we extend the areas where Nokia Transport works. If you want to try it now, go to Nokia Beta Labs and download the beta.

Information technology is having a profound impact on our ability to support improved persistence, attainment, and completion for adult learners. Improved metrics, reduced time to and cost of degrees, and better assessments are permanent changes in the education landscape. IT also has changed the meaning of completion from a fixed objective in time to a repeating cycle with multiple "end points" in the learner's life. I will analyze this new meaning of completion and its implications for workplace education, accreditation, financial aid, and the academic calendar as well as the higher education economic model.
